Why a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy is needed when a tooth becomes damaged. Damage typically happens when trauma occurs to the tooth or when a tooth has become infected. You will typically know there is a problem due to the pain you experience including sensitivity to hot and cold food or drinks.

The interior of your tooth contains a pulp, which is the nerves and blood vessels within the tooth. When the pulp becomes infected, it needs to be removed and the way it is done is through a root canal. Having a root canal performed can help prevent you from developing a serious infection that can damage your jaw bone or the surrounding teeth. If you think you need to have a root canal performed, call Downtown Dental Centre today. The main reason the procedure is done is to save the tooth from extraction. In addition, a root canal will allow you to keep a natural appearance, while protecting your other teeth from damage.

The Root Canal Procedure

The root canal procedure is typically done in one dental visit, but it may take two to fully complete depending on your situation. When you come in for your root canal therapy, we will take an x-ray of your tooth to determine the best method for treatment. Once we have a good idea of how to treat your tooth, you will receive a local anesthetic to numb the area.

Our dentist will then place a rubber dam around the tooth in question and dry the tooth from any saliva before the procedure begins. At this point, a small hole will be drilled into the tooth to allow our dentist access to the tooth’s nerve and pulp.

The pulp and nerve will be removed from the tooth and the inside of the tooth will be cleaned out from all bacteria inside. Once the tooth is cleaned, it will be filled, sealed, and a crown will be placed a top of the tooth to protect it.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Most patients know they need a root canal because they experience mild to severe pain in the area. Typically, the pain appears when the tooth is pressed or during chewing, but it may appear as a continuous dull pain as well.
  • Your tooth is dark and discoloured
  • You have sensitivity to hot or cold items
  • You have a pimple on the gum that does not go away
  • You have tenderness and swelling around the tooth
